This Plein Air painting was done at the Botanical Garden. Our group is small right now but I'm sure it will grow. If anybody is interested in joining, just send me an email and I'll add you. Btw, you don't need to be in Austin to join. If you live in another city but would like to be part of the Plein Air blog, you're welcome to join!

These are two paintings of the same location but opposite angle. The sole purpose of this exercises is to work on light and color. These ones are done on a dark masonite board which is quite a different experience than painting on a white canvas. I find it helps to start with an initial dark value to compare the lights and darks. I'm not sure I like its flatness though; the canvas texture is definitely a plus. I think I'll use a canvas with a wash of mid tone next time.

Hi,

I've been working on the feedback that I received from several people attending the Massive Black Reverie Workshop in Dallas. To make it short, I need to improve on line weight, atmospheric perspective and tangents to achieve an overall harmony. As a personal goal, I also want to practice drawing with light in order to gain a better understanding of tones.

The three images above are;
1-the final piece.
2-a quick tonal study of the materials and notes on areas of improvement
3-a thumbnail of the final piece dealing with composition, eye direction and basic tones
